What is rate parity?

Rate parity is the practice — and often a contractual requirement — of showing the same room rate for the same dates across every channel: OTAs, your own website, and any other platform where a guest can book.

Why rate parity exists

OTAs have historically asked properties to sign most-favoured-nation (MFN) or parity clauses, ensuring the OTA's own price is never undercut by the property's direct site or another OTA, so travellers trust that the OTA's price is the best available. From the OTA's point of view, this protects the traffic investment it makes in the property; from the property's point of view, it limits how aggressively it can discount its own direct booking engine.

Wide parity vs narrow parity

Wide parity means a property can't be cheaper anywhere, including its own direct site or offline. Narrow parity still blocks publicly undercutting the OTA, but allows small, non-public perks on the direct site — for example a rate for logged-in loyalty members, or a closed member rate — without changing the public price. Regulators in several European countries pushed OTAs toward narrower parity clauses in the mid-2010s following competition investigations into wide clauses, though exact rules differ by country and have continued to evolve. Check what your own OTA contract currently requires rather than assuming.

How properties keep rates in parity without doing it by hand

Manually keeping parity across five or six extranets is slow and error-prone every time a price changes. A channel manager that pushes one rate change to every connected channel at once — adjusted for each channel's own currency or commission math where needed — is the practical way most properties stay in parity, rather than trying to remember to update every extranet by hand each time a price moves.

What breaks parity by accident

Forgetting one channel

A price change made on the others, but not pushed to every channel.

An OTA's own promotion

A mobile discount or loyalty perk silently undercutting your other channels.

Currency rounding

Differences across channels with different default currencies.

A seasonal override

Applied in one calendar but not pushed everywhere.

How Prime Host handles this

One change, every channel

Update a rate once in Prime Host's calendar and it is pushed to every connected OTA and your direct booking engine together, each read back and confirmed.

Per-channel adjustment when you want it

If your contract allows a different price on one channel, you can set a per-channel percentage or type the guest-facing price you want and let the system work out what to send — your choice, and your responsibility to match your own OTA contracts.

See where the guest-paid price drifted

Prime Shield flags when what the guest actually paid differs from what you sent, which is often the first sign a promotion has broken parity on one channel.

Frequently asked questions

What is rate parity in hotels?

Showing the same room rate for the same dates across every channel you sell on — OTAs, your own website and anywhere else a guest can book.

Is rate parity legally required?

It depends on your OTA contract and your country's competition rules, which have changed over time in some markets, particularly parts of Europe. Check your own contract — this isn't legal advice.

Can I offer a cheaper rate on my own website?

It depends entirely on what your current OTA contracts say about narrow vs wide parity. Software can't decide that for you.

Why do rates sometimes differ across channels even with parity?

Promotions, mobile discounts, loyalty programs, and currency rounding can all cause small differences.

How do I keep rates in parity across many channels?

Change the rate once in a channel manager connected to all of them, rather than updating each extranet manually.
