How Airbnb calendar sync actually works
Airbnb doesn't have an extranet quite like Booking.com or Agoda — it has calendar sync settings, and a separate official connection route for channel managers. The two work very differently.
How Airbnb's free iCal sync works
- 1
Open Calendar on the listing, then Availability settings
Inside Airbnb's own host dashboard.
- 2
Export your Airbnb calendar
Copy the iCal link it gives you.
- 3
Import that link into the other platform
Paste it into Vrbo's or Booking.com's own calendar-import field, where available.
- 4
Repeat in the other direction
Export the other platform's iCal link and import it back into Airbnb's sync settings, so blocked dates flow both ways.
iCal sync vs an official channel manager connection
| iCal (free) | Official connection (OAuth / software partner) | |
|---|---|---|
| Syncs availability | Yes | Yes |
| Syncs prices | No | Yes |
| Syncs reservation details and messages | No | Yes |
| Update speed | Not instant — a delay between platforms | Near real-time |
| How it's set up | You copy and paste a link yourself | You authorise the connection once from inside your own Airbnb account |
Why iCal can still cause a double booking
What iCal actually prevents
- Blocks a date once the export/import has caught up on both platforms
What it doesn't
- Two guests booking the same date on two different platforms in the gap before that sync runs — the main cause of iCal double bookings
- Any price mismatch between platforms — iCal never carries price
- Guest messages or reservation detail staying in sync
The official route, and what it covers
Airbnb's own connectivity programme
Airbnb runs its own connectivity/software-partner programme. An approved channel manager connects through it, with the property owner authorising access from inside their own Airbnb account — not a password shared with a third party.
Vrbo and Booking.com have similar options
Both also offer their own approved connectivity-partner routes, in addition to plain iCal, for software that has gone through their certification.
Where Prime Host fits in
Airbnb connected the proper way
Prime Host connects to Airbnb through Airbnb's own official connection, not iCal — so rates, availability and reservations move together, not just date blocks.
One calendar either way
Airbnb bookings sit alongside Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia and your direct site in the same calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Does Airbnb have an extranet like Booking.com?
Not quite — Airbnb's host dashboard has calendar sync settings and a separate connectivity programme for channel managers, rather than one extranet-style back office.
Does iCal sync prices between Airbnb and other platforms?
No. iCal only blocks or unblocks dates — it never carries price.
Why did I get a double booking even though my calendars were synced?
iCal isn't instant. If two guests book on different platforms in the gap before the sync catches up, both can go through.
What's the difference between iCal and Airbnb's official connection?
iCal is a free, manual link you copy between platforms and only moves availability. The official route is an authorised connection for approved software that also moves prices and reservations, closer to real time.
How does Prime Host connect to Airbnb?
Through Airbnb's own official connection, authorised from inside your Airbnb account — not iCal.
